Complete beginners (or almost): the young talents conquering Serie A
The future is already being shaped, at least on the pitch. Serie A 2025/26 delivered more than a few stories of teenagers and emerging talents who, despite their age and, in some cases, their status as complete newcomers, established themselves as technical and charismatic leaders for their teams through performances full of quality and personality.
Today, we take a closer look at some of their stories.
Francesco Pio Esposito, a champion in his first season
It would be impossible to start with anyone else. In August 2025, Francesco Pio Esposito made his Serie A debut for Inter and, just over a month later, scored his first league goal against Cagliari.
Among the young players who attracted the most attention throughout the 2025/26 Serie A campaign, Esposito undoubtedly stands out. Physical presence, a natural eye for goal and remarkable maturity for his age made the Italian striker one of the most exciting prospects in both domestic football and the Azzurri setup.
Inside the penalty area, he distinguished himself through composure and instinct, qualities that allowed him to make a consistent impact throughout the season and deliver in high-profile matches, including Inter vs Juventus. What impressed observers and supporters most, however, was the ease with which he adapted to the pace and demands of top-flight football.
His tally included seven Serie A goals, one in the Coppa Italia, two in the UEFA Champions League and one over the summer in the FIFA Club World Cup.
Don't call him a rookie.
Antonio Arena, a record-breaking debut
If there is one name that perfectly embodies the next generation, it is Antonio Arena. The Roma forward rewrote the history books by becoming the first player born in 2009 to make an appearance in Serie A.
His debut came on 9 February 2026 against Cagliari, exactly one day before his seventeenth birthday. The achievement placed him among the youngest debutants ever to appear in any of Europe's top five leagues.
Arena had already attracted attention before then. In 2025, he became the first player born in 2009 to score in professional football, finding the net for Pescara against Lucchese in March. Then, in January 2026, he announced himself to Roma supporters by coming off the bench against Torino in the Coppa Italia and scoring after just 30 seconds.
Destined for greatness.
Antonio Vergara: spirit and courage in Naples
There are explosive breakthroughs and instant impacts, but there are also careers built step by step through consistency, intelligence and the ability to seize opportunities when they arise. Antonio Vergara belongs firmly in the latter category.
The Napoli midfielder entered senior football during the 2025/26 season, making his debut against Sassuolo in August and immediately displaying technical quality and impressive composure in possession. Blessed with strong vision and intelligent movement, Vergara adapted quickly to the demands of a highly competitive environment.
He finished the campaign with 19 appearances and three goals: one in Serie A, one in the Coppa Italia and one in the UEFA Champions League. Never intimidated by the occasion, he approached every challenge with confidence and determination, proving to be a reliable asset both in build-up play and in moments when greater balance was required.
Maturity.
While the debuts of Vergara, Esposito and Arena may have been among the most eye-catching stories of the season, there were also several young players who, despite their age, emerged as genuine leaders for their teams.
Nico Paz, a midfielder with a nose for goal
Elegant in possession and consistently composed in his decision-making, Nico Paz established himself as one of the key figures in Como's extraordinary season, which culminated in a historic qualification for the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League.
His influence was so significant that he was named Serie A Enilive's Best Midfielder for 2025/26.
The statistic that stands out most concerns his shooting: 46 shots on target, the highest total in the league, averaging 1.3 per match. Exceptional numbers for a player who is not a traditional striker but instead interprets the role of attacking midfielder with remarkable freedom and creativity.
Versatile.
Marco Palestra and the art of taking on defenders
Speed, bravery and a constant desire to make things happen. Marco Palestra earned his place through a direct and fearless approach to the game. Having made his Serie A debut with Atalanta the previous season, he enjoyed a true breakthrough campaign at Cagliari.
He finished third in the league for attempted dribbles, with 118 individual take-ons at an average of 3.2 per match. His ability to trouble opponents is also reflected by the 109 fouls he won, the highest figure in all of Serie A.
All of this came at a remarkable average speed of 27.96 km/h, earning him the Frecciarossa Speed Award for the 2025/26 season.
Unstoppable.
Kenan Yildiz, Juventus' architect
The 2025/26 season represented the definitive breakthrough for Kenan Yildiz. Wearing Juventus' iconic number 10 shirt, he became a central figure in the club's attacking play, standing out for his creativity and ability to beat opponents, even during a campaign that brought mixed fortunes for the Bianconeri.
The numbers highlight the completeness of his game. Alongside his 10 Serie A goals, Yildiz attempted 153 dribbles – the highest total in the league – at an average of 4.6 per match. He also finished second in both shots on target (40) and key passes (69), underlining his influence both as a creator and a finisher.
Leader.
Record-breaking debuts, long-awaited breakthroughs and unexpected rises to prominence: once again, Serie A 2025/26 demonstrated its ability to nurture and showcase young talent. Because the future of the league has already begun writing its story.
