CALCIO SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Within the framework of UEFA’s Sustainability Strategy 2030, “Strength Through Unity,” Lega Serie A was the first football league selected by UEFA to implement a pilot project aimed at defining a clear sustainability strategy by the 2023/2024 season. The strategy is structured around 11 policy areas: anti-racism, child and youth protection, equality and inclusion, football for all abilities, health and well-being, support for refugees, solidarity and rights, circular economy, climate action, event sustainability, and infrastructure sustainability.
For each of these areas, ambitious and robust objectives to be achieved by 2030 have been defined, through the development of dedicated programs and tailor-made projects, in full compliance with UEFA’s guidelines and principles.

This led to the creation of the 2030 Strategy “CSR – Calcio Social Responsibility,” published on 4 August 2023, which represents a fundamental springboard to make Serie A football a virtuous model, capable of looking to the future with increasing confidence and ambition.

The Strategy stems from a strong sense of responsibility towards the wider community that makes football a global tribe of fans and enthusiasts, and from the urgency to give back the passion it thrives on by striving to create a tangible impact on society. Above all, this Strategy is not a final destination, but a first step towards building a supportive and sustainable future within and beyond the football ecosystem. The more than 60 targets identified in the document represent a starting point and will be continuously monitored, revised, expanded and adapted to an ever-changing world.

LEGA SERIE A AND UEFA TOGETHER FOR FOOTBALL SUSTAINABILITY

Lega Calcio Serie A and UEFA announce the launch of a collaboration based on a shared vision of a sustainable football system capable of initiating, inspiring and accelerating collective action while respecting human and environmental rights.

Within the framework of UEFA’s Football Sustainability Strategy 2030, published in December 2021, Lega Serie A was the first football league chosen by UEFA to implement a pilot project aimed at defining a clear sustainability strategy by the 2023/2024 season. This strategy is articulated across 11 thematic areas: anti-racism, child and youth protection, equality and inclusion, football for all abilities, health and well-being, support for refugees, solidarity and rights, circular economy, climate protection, event sustainability and infrastructure sustainability.

For each of these areas of focus, the two institutions will work side by side to define ambitious and solid objectives to be achieved by 2030, developing specific programs and tailored projects in line with the guidelines and principles set out in UEFA’s Football Sustainability Strategy 2030.

Lorenzo Casini, President of Lega Serie A, stated:

“Football is followed by millions of people around the world and therefore also has the responsibility to generate a positive impact and promote best practices on global issues such as environmental sustainability, the transition to a green economy and respect for human rights. I would like to thank UEFA for identifying Lega Serie A as the right partner, after years of growing commitment to social responsibility initiatives, to jointly embark on an ambitious yet necessary journey that requires teamwork and shared responsibility among all stakeholders. I also thank Lega Serie A CEO Luigi De Siervo and the working groups involved who made the launch of this project possible. We are proud to work alongside UEFA to raise awareness of new sustainability objectives and to promote among all our fans the social impact that football can generate.”

Michele Uva, UEFA Director of Football and Social Responsibility, commented:

“Environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria are increasingly applied to promote sustainability and the operational and financial strategies of professional football. Our ‘Strength Through Unity’ strategy has defined UEFA’s long-term commitment to fostering collaborative action, driven by the belief that respect for human rights and the environment lies at the heart of European football’s success. We are pleased that Lega Serie A is embarking on this journey as the first pilot league to implement UEFA’s sustainability framework, creating a cascading effect by leveraging Serie A’s global platform.”
