Matchday 10 brings a Halloween derby and chances to pull clear

AC Milan vs. Inter takes place on the night of October 31st, with Juventus vs. Napoli the following evening. At the bottom, Sassuolo vs. Fiorentina and Lecce vs. Genoa promise plenty of drama.

The third matchday in a week. It is time to turn our attention to Matchday 10 of Serie A, another intriguing round shaped above all by the relentless schedule teams have faced over the past seven days. This one, one more, then a well-earned break. Physical and mental endurance are being pushed to the limit, and right now the only option is to keep going. In mid-November, during the international window, there will be time to take stock, make adjustments and get some injured players back. Nine rounds are already in the books, the table is beginning to take clearer shape and the next set of fixtures should provide an even better indication of where everyone stands. The Derby della Madonnina on Saturday night is the standout fixture, followed by Juventus vs. Napoli in Turin the following evening. On paper, Roma and Como face less demanding assignments. The danger is the amount of energy already spent in recent weeks, a factor that could have a major impact at this stage of the season.

Bologna vs. Monza (Saturday, 3:00 PM CET)

Matchday 10 gets underway in Emilia. Palladino's new-look Bologna are undoubtedly one of October's most in-form teams and come into the game fresh from a huge win at San Siro. The 4-2 victory over AC Milan showed Bologna at their best, responding strongly and taking control in the second half behind a surprising Samel Mbangula hat-trick. The Rossoblù are climbing the table, with the top half just two points away and the European places beginning to come into view. This looks like an excellent opportunity against a Monza side that has dipped in recent matches. Jurić lasted only one half in the latest game against Napoli, and even another Varela goal was not enough to bring valuable points back to Brianza. Monza's survival push is not in danger. The club remains two points clear of the relegation zone, the quality in the squad is not in question, and learning how to battle means picking up results at difficult grounds like the Renato Dall'Ara.

Udinese vs. Roma (Saturday, 6:00 PM CET)

The home side finally got some relief against Parma, ending a seemingly endless run of consecutive defeats. Zaniolo's return has added quality to Udinese's options. The Bianconeri No. 10 is still some way from peak fitness, but facing his former club should provide an extra adrenaline boost. Roma needs to take advantage of the schedule, with AC Milan vs. Inter and Juventus vs. Napoli offering a major opportunity for Gian Piero Gasperini's side to climb higher. Roma remains one of the unbeaten teams in the league and has made full use of the strength of its squad. The trip to the Bluenergy Stadium is exactly the kind of obstacle it needs to overcome to strengthen the group's maturity and confidence.

AC Milan vs. Inter (Saturday, 8:45 PM CET)

Halloween night and the Milan derby. A frightening city showdown at the Giuseppe Meazza. Inter have the chance to perhaps knock AC Milan out of the Scudetto race altogether, while the Rossoneri are looking to keep every possibility open by building on their strong recent derby record. Inter have not beaten AC Milan since the famous 2-1 win on April 22nd, 2024, when Simone Inzaghi's team secured their 20th Scudetto against its eternal rival. Two and a half years later, this Halloween clash has AC Milan backed into a corner. Amorim needs a response to lift both morale and ambition. Inter are flying. Lazio continue to keep pace, but Chivu's group still found a way through a particularly complicated match in Venezia. There is no hiding at San Siro. Trick or treat?

Como vs. Venezia (Sunday, 12:30 PM CET)

Nine points from the last three matches. The Como hurricane is back, and it appears to have enough force to sweep aside every obstacle. That makes it four straight wins when you include the headline-grabbing Champions League victory over Manchester United. But danger is not always easy to spot, and sometimes it is necessary to slow down and carefully consider the next move. A wounded Venezia arrive at the Sinigaglia, making it even more restless and unpredictable. The defeat to Inter left Davide Nicola with the bitter taste of a missed opportunity after his side managed to make life difficult for the Nerazzurri. Now the focus must turn to the table. Venezia remain bottom, desperately clinging to the teams just above. A big result is needed by the lake, and the Arancioneroverdi are ready to give it everything.

Frosinone vs. Torino (Sunday, 3:00 PM CET)

Playing with confidence and at a European pace, Frosinone continue to impress and are reaching heights rarely seen before. No promoted team other than Juventus in 2007/08 had ever collected 17 points from its first nine Serie A matches. The Ciociari's numbers are remarkable, and so is the football, with the 5-1 win over Lecce providing clear proof. The test against Torino is a dangerous one. The Granata's away form has been close to European level, and some of their most convincing displays have come on the road. Abate's side failed the Como test, but the hunger remains, and a win over Alvini's team would quickly erase the disappointment of the midweek round.

Lazio vs. Cagliari (Sunday, 3:00 PM CET)

Lazio are looking to pull clear at the top. With AC Milan vs. Inter in the background, the Biancocelesti could open up a gap at the summit if the Nerazzurri fail to win the derby. Gattuso's side produced another superb attacking display in Reggio Emilia, winning a wild game 6-2 despite missing two penalties and showing an attacking potential that was breathtaking at times. The league leaders now need to complete the job at the Olimpico. Cagliari come into the match empty-handed from their run against Monza, Bologna and Roma. Pisacane still has a useful cushion over the group at the bottom, but the lack of results threatens to drag the Sardinians into a negative spiral. On the injury front, Gattuso is hoping to recover Rovella and add another option in midfield. Noslin comes into the game off a brace against Sassuolo, while the usual selection battles remain open at center back. Cagliari also have decisions to make. Mendy is competing with Nzola for a starting spot alongside Daniel Maldini, who has gone several matches without scoring.

Lecce vs. Genoa (Sunday, 6:00 PM CET)

Separated by one point, Lecce and Genoa are putting everything on the line in the battle for survival. Di Francesco and De Rossi come into the match in very different moods. The Lecce coach endured a miserable night at the Stirpe on Thursday, while the Genoa boss stunned Juventus, further evidence of the team's clear change of direction in recent outings. At the Via del Mare, however, everything can change quickly. Lecce know that their survival bid can be built in front of their home crowd, and this is an excellent opportunity to make a strong response. There are certainly defensive issues to address after the Frosinone match quickly turned into one to forget. On the other side, De Rossi's Genoa have fixed many of their smaller problems. The defence is conceding fewer goals, the players are proving interchangeable, and the improvements in both play and tempo are producing encouraging results. The next step for the Rossoblù is to show it can find greater consistency.

Juventus vs. Napoli (Sunday, 8:45 PM CET)

A chance to make amends. The first part of the season has not been satisfying for either Juventus or Napoli, with both forced to chase the teams at the top. They meet on Matchday 10 level on points but coming from different directions, with both struggling for consistency. These are days of reflection for Juventus. The squad has gone into a training camp ahead of the huge showdown with former coach Max Allegri, with the aim of bringing the group together and fixing some of the flaws exposed in Genoa. Spalletti's side knows an immediate response is needed at the Allianz Stadium. Against Napoli, the margin for error is minimal, with the chance to beat a direct rival balanced against the risk of slipping even further down the table with another defeat. Napoli, meanwhile, made a strong statement at the Brianteo by putting four past Monza. The Azzurri therefore appear to be recovering, led by the duo of McTominay and De Bruyne, who have rediscovered their best form and lifted the mood at Castel Volturno. Fourth place is not far away, and both teams have the opportunity to get back on track, build momentum and head into the winter in strong form. There is no room for another mistake in Turin.

Sassuolo vs. Fiorentina (Monday, 6:30 PM CET)

GettyImages-2300289732

There is plenty riding on the match at the Mapei Stadium. The first Monday fixture is one both coaches need to handle carefully. Sassuolo are coming off a 6-2 home defeat to Lazio, have conceded 12 goals in their last three matches and have not won since early September, when they beat Juventus 3-2. The story is similar for Paolo Vanoli and Fiorentina, which finally picked up another league point after a 2-2 draw with Atalanta at the Franchi. The Viola remains in the group just above bottom-placed Venezia, and the search for a clear identity continues alongside an urgent need to climb away from a dangerously low position in the table. Aquilani faces his coaching past, but he cannot afford to lose focus. Vanoli wants to dispel doubts over his future in charge of the Tuscan side. The pressure is rising, and Sassuolo and Fiorentina are both searching for the remedy to get themselves back on track.

Atalanta vs. Parma (Monday, 8:45 PM CET)

GettyImages-2302424195

Sarri once again has the task of closing out the matchday. As was already the case in the 2-2 draw away to Fiorentina, Atalanta will play the final game of the round. The opponent is Gilardino's Parma, who are looking to build on their goalless draw against Udinese. For the Dea, the usual injury problems are resurfacing, with Kristensen the latest casualty after picking up a problem in Thursday night's game in Florence. De Ketelaere was the standout performer for the Nerazzurri, delivering a goal and an assist and thriving in a new role as the central attacking midfielder in the Tuscan coach's 4-2-3-1. The visitors' main question is in goal. The Serie A debut of 2004-born Juventus academy graduate Giovanni Daffara has put Edoardo Corvi's starting place under threat, leaving Gilardino to decide who gets the nod. The attacking problem remains. Parma have scored only once in their last four matches, highlighting a lack of composure in front of goal. Atalanta have gone four league matches without a win, while Parma's drought stands at five. Neither can afford to wait any longer for three points.
