Como vs. Roma and the battle for the Champions League

The match at the Sinigaglia has a lot riding on it: Fàbregas and Gasperini, level on 51 points, are competing for fourth place. Atalanta and Juventus trail behind.

Sprints, bursts and overdrive. The race for the Champions League delivers excitement, and as the weeks pass, the margin for error narrows drastically. Fans do the math: some prepare tables imagining different scenarios, some wait and keep their fingers crossed, and some can only hope for the misfortunes of others. The current standings are only a draft of the final picture; ten matchdays represent a wide space within which to draw the lines of one’s future. Each team involved works to maintain consistency in performance, a factor that inevitably passes through the various head-to-head clashes scattered along the path; the next one in chronological order is Como vs. Roma. Facing each other on Sunday at 18:00 CET, the Lariani and the Giallorossi sit side by side in fourth place on 51 points. The match calls for a big opportunity: for Roma there’s the desire to regain momentum after collecting just one point from the last two matches against Juventus and Genoa; for Como, on the other hand, the aim is to stay on track by maintaining the same pace of the past two months.

Roma and Como’s form

Affected by a tricky schedule, Gasperini’s team have slightly shortened their stride in recent weeks. It all began with the 2–2 at the Maradona stadium in mid-February, where Alisson Santos’ late goal left that bitter aftertaste for the side from the capital; a glass half full (or half empty, depending on interpretation) that was followed by a comfortable home win against Cremonese the following week. The biggest regret came in the 3–3 at the Olimpico at the end of the month against Juventus: trailing 3–1, the Bianconeri pulled off an unexpected comeback in stoppage time, sealed by Gatti’s goal. The chance for a small breakaway vanished and Como caught up on matchday 28. The Giallorossi then fell away at Genoa’s ground as they lost 2–1 to the Grifone, a result that highlights the difficulty of the last four league matches. In total, it amounts to five points from the 12 available, a tally that must be improved immediately to regain the pace Gasperini’s side maintained for long stretches of this Serie A Enilive season.ù

It’s a different story for their opponents. Como are no longer a surprise, and the outstanding performances already seen in the first part of the season are being proved through the results collected in 2026. Fàbregas’ side, in the current calendar year has lost only to AC Milan and Fiorentina, managing to pick up points both at the Sinigaglia and away from home, without any distinction. A run of three consecutive victories is the calling card with which the Biancoblù arrive at the big match with Roma. The team is developing different qualities, and clear proof of this is the victory in Cagliari in the last round of matches, where even the ability to suffer and resist shows that Como are a side ready to fight until the end for a Champions League spot.

The first meeting this season

Memories of the match three months ago at the Olimpico highlight Roma’s success and strong performance, as they defeated Como 1–0. It was a balanced match throughout, but at the same time it was mainly characterised by the intense approach from the home side; Gasperini was particularly effective in shaping an aggressive team that pressed all over the pitch, managing to limit the Biancoblù’s quick passing play. The game was decided in the second half thanks to a precise diagonal shot by Wesley that beat Butez, while only in the closing stages did Como manage to become dangerous with a late push forward.

Away from home, Gasperini has usually set up a more vertical Roma side, and that is probably the style best suited to the context of the Sinigaglia. On the other hand, Como have also learned to wait for their opponents before punishing them with the speed and quality of their attacking wingers. All of this points toward a different type of contest compared to the Roma vs. Como match seen in mid-December. The stakes are higher, and the two teams could even choose to set up in a more cautious way, at least initially, before playing their cards in the final whirlwind half hour.

News from the other grounds

Como vs. Roma is the main course of a menu full of storylines. The sprint at the top also features Inter vs. Atalanta and Udinese vs. Juventus, two matches scheduled for Saturday. The side from Bergamo must shake off the fatigue from their home defeat to Bayern München to once again take control of their destiny in the league; the level of difficulty remains extremely high, as Inter will try to react at San Siro after the derby defeat and, for their part, Palladino knows they cannot lose further ground after the latest setback at the hands of Udinese. The team that has managed to stay attached to the train is Juventus: the extremely valuable draw away at Roma gave them momentum, and the dominant 4–0 home victory over Pisa improved the standings, which now mean that they’re a point off of 4th place. The Bluenergy Stadium is a fortress that must be approached with the utmost concentration and caution, and Spalletti will try to take the full three points before settling back and waiting for the result from the Sinigaglia. At the moment both Napoli and AC Milan seem to have settled respectively in third and second place: Conte hosts Lecce with a 5-point cushion to defend over the chasing pack, while Allegri has reopened the Scudetto race, moving to +9 over the Como–Roma duo and now preparing to face Lazio for a definitive step forward. The advantage is significant, the others are battling it out, and the end of the season is heating up in search of the final confirmations of a Serie A Enilive alive in every possible way.
