Chivu, the man who shaped Inter’s destiny

From the club’s youth academy to the top of Italian football: identity, vision, and all the records achieved by the coach who led Inter to the title

Cristian Chivu has been the quiet mastermind behind Inter’s Scudetto triumph. He arrived at Appiano Gentile with little fanfare and without the status of an established top coach, yet step by step the Romanian built a title-winning side defined by balance, identity, and consistency. At 45, in his first season in charge of the Nerazzurri, he guided Inter to the 21st league title in the club’s history, rewriting records and reshaping the hierarchy of Italian football.

What truly set Chivu apart was his deep-rooted connection to the Nerazzurri. He grew within the Inter family, first as a player helping the club win three Serie A titles during one of its most successful eras, and later as a coach in the youth system, where he fully absorbed the club’s culture, values, and identity. Inter’s decision to appoint him was very much a home-grown choice: a coach who understands exactly what the club stands for and who could provide continuity, both tactically and emotionally, in the post-Inzaghi era.

Chivu inherited a strong squad, but one still carrying the scars of a painful end to the previous season - runners-up in Serie A and beaten in the Champions League final. His first task was subtle but fundamental: to restore belief, freedom, and a sense of unity within the group.

“We
went
back
to
our
roots,
to
what
being
Inter
truly
means:
pride
and
loyalty.”

Those words, spoken at his presentation press conference on June 14, 2025, became the guiding philosophy of Inter’s season.

From Parma to Inter: the decisive step in his rise

Before taking the step up to Inter, Chivu gained valuable experience at Parma, where he inherited a fragile, unbalanced team in desperate need of stability. He introduced a five-man defence, rebuilt the side’s solidity, and managed to secure survival in just 13 games, no small feat given the demanding fixture list.

Triumph in his first attempt: stats and records

Chivu’s journey immediately earned its place in both Inter and Serie A history. Winning the Scudetto in his very first season in charge of Inter is an achievement managed by only a select few before him: names like Weisz, Foni, Invernizzi, and Mourinho. And it is with Mourinho that he shares another significant milestone: Chivu became the first foreign coach in years to win Serie A after a long spell dominated by Italian managers.

The speed of his success makes the accomplishment even more impressive. Securing the title after just 48 matches in charge makes him the second-fastest coach of the modern era to win the Scudetto, behind only “The Special One.” His impact was immediate, but also remarkably consistent: with a 74% win rate in the league (26 victories in 35 matches), Chivu recorded the best Serie A winning percentage in Inter’s history among coaches with at least 25 games in charge.

He also joins the exclusive group of figures who have won the title both as a player and as a coach. It is a feat the club had not seen since Armando Castellazzi in the 1930s, making it even more significant in the modern era. His connection to the club runs even deeper. After guiding Inter Primavera to the title in 2022, Chivu became the only coach since Invernizzi to win major honours with both the youth team and the senior team, further proof of the deep bond between him and the Nerazzurri.

In a league that has produced seven different title-winning managers in the last seven seasons, Chivu’s success is also a reminder that Serie A remains fertile ground for fresh ideas and ambitious projects.

Ideas and identity: the making of Chivu’s Inter

Beyond the numbers, there was substance. Across 54 official matches in charge of Inter, Chivu showed steady growth not only tactically, but also in the way he managed the squad and handled the pressure around the club. At first, his approach was calm and reassuring, helping to rebuild unity within the environment; as the season progressed, he became increasingly combative, fully embracing the intensity of a title race.

Tactically, his aim was clear: make Inter more aggressive and more direct. He pushed the defensive line higher, focused winning possession back in advanced areas, and reshaped the back line with Akanji in the middle and Bisseck in the wider role to support a bold, high defensive line. In midfield, he brought the best out of Zieliński, while out wide he unlocked the full potential of Dimarco, who produced the best season of his career.

Up front, Chivu relied on careful squad management. He constantly rotated his attacking options to integrate Bonny and Pio Esposito, while still relying on the Lautaro-Thuram partnership in the big moments of the season. The result was an Inter side that maximised individual quality without ever losing its collective balance.

From the title to the future: the start of a new era

If there is one area where this Inter side can still improve, it is in the biggest head-to-head clashes, both in Italy and in Europe. It’s a small detail that does not take away from the scale of the achievement, but one that points toward the next step in the Club’s evolution.

This Scudetto is not simply the end of a journey, it is the beginning of a new era. And at the heart of it all is Cristian Chivu: the man who shaped Inter’s destiny and the leader of a team that learned how to win while staying true to its identity.
