Castro joins Roma: Gasperini has his new centre-forward

The wait is over. Roma's first signing of the summer is Santiago Castro, one of the most exciting young forwards to emerge in Serie A over the past two seasons. After playing a key role in Bologna's rise under Vincenzo Italiano, the 2004-born striker moves to the capital to begin the next chapter of his career under Gian Piero Gasperini.

Part of the Argentine’s role will be to offer cover for Donyell Malen, but – more than that – he represents an investment in both the present and the future. Gasperini sees in "Toto" a modern, complete striker whose qualities are perfectly suited to the manager’s footballing style, characteristics that convinced Roma to make him their priority.

Numbers, goals and growth: Castro's rise at Bologna

Born in 2004, Castro established himself as one of the brightest young forwards in Serie A over the past two and a half seasons. During his time at Bologna he made 105 appearances, scoring 22 goals and providing 12 assists, becoming one of the key figures behind the Rossoblù's impressive progress.

Having joined from Vélez in January 2024 while still a teenager, he needed only a few months to settle in, scoring his first league goal against Juventus. From that point onwards his development never stopped, and he reached double figures in both of the last two seasons, scoring 15 Serie A goals and another seven across domestic and European competitions.

Naturally right-footed, Castro is capable of finding the net in a variety of ways: his five headed goals and five left-footed finishes since arriving in Italy underline the qualities of a versatile centre-forward.

A modern striker to suit Gasperini's football

Beyond his goalscoring instincts, Castro has made his mark in Serie A thanks to the quality of his all-round play. His technical ability, link-up play and awareness in the final third allow him to contribute throughout attacking moves rather than simply finishing them. Hold-up play, perfectly timed runs into the penalty area and excellent first-touch control, even when finishing first time from waist-height deliveries, are among his standout qualities, drawing comparisons with fellow Argentine Lautaro Martínez.

It was the completeness of his game, however, that truly convinced Gasperini. Castro finished last season as the second-highest striker for ground duels contested, seventh for total duels won, eighth for aerial duels won and third for successful tackles, with a 60% success rate. He also ranked fourth for switch passes, highlighting his effectiveness as a reference point when in possession. Numbers that explain exactly why Gasperini wanted him: not simply a goalscorer, but a centre-forward capable of working for the team, operating across the entire attacking line and interpreting the role according to the demands of the modern game.

Another weapon for Roma

While the former Vélez striker will undoubtedly start the season behind Malen in the pecking order after the Dutchman's outstanding campaign, his versatility opens up several options for the Giallorossi’s set-up; although a natural centre-forward, Castro enjoys drifting across the front line and is equally comfortable playing alongside another striker. That fluidity offers Gasperini several tactical solutions, from a 3-5-2 to a 3-4-1-2, giving Roma greater attacking flexibility as they return to the Champions League.

After all, Gasperini has built much of his managerial career around developing elite strikers, from Duván Zapata and Luis Muriel to Mateo Retegui and Donyell Malen. Castro now hopes to become the next forward to take that decisive step under his guidance.

Roma's 36th Argentine

With his arrival, Santiago Castro becomes the 36th Argentine in Roma's history. It is a line that includes some of the club's greatest names, from 1960s goalscoring legend Pedro Manfredini – Roma's sixth-highest scorer of all time with 104 goals in 164 competitive appearances – to Abel Balbo and Gabriel Batistuta. A new chapter now begins for "Toto": following in the footsteps of the great Argentines who came before him and writing his own place in Roma's history.
