Vicario returns to Serie A Enilive: a new challenge between the posts at Juventus

Three years after his last appearance for Empoli, Guglielmo Vicario is back in Serie A Enilive. The 29-year-old goalkeeper leaves Tottenham for a new challenge at Juventus, returning to Italy after his spell in the Premier League and a Europa League triumph in which he played a leading role.

Back in Italy

From Empoli to London, from London to Turin. Guglielmo Vicario returns to the league where he established himself as one of the most exciting Italian goalkeepers of his generation.

Juventus have signed him from Tottenham on loan until 30 June 2027, adding experience and reliability to their goalkeeping department.

For Vicario, it marks a return to Serie A after three years away. Before moving to England, he had made 73 appearances in the Italian top flight, four for Cagliari and 69 for Empoli. It was in Tuscany that he truly established himself, spending two seasons as first-choice goalkeeper and playing 71 games in all competitions. His performances convinced Tottenham to bring him to the Premier League in the summer of 2023.

Three years in the Premier League and a european trophy

Vicario made an immediate impact in English football. In his debut season, he played all 38 Premier League matches, quickly establishing himself as a key figure for Spurs. His time in London came to an end after 117 appearances in all competitions and 29 clean sheets.

The highlight was undoubtedly the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League, the first major trophy of his career. Vicario played a decisive role in Tottenham's European campaign, keeping five clean sheets. Three of those came in their final four matches of the competition, including the 1-0 win over Manchester United in the final in Bilbao. His performances also earned him a place in the UEFA Europa League Team of the Season.

Vicario's story: from Empoli to the national team

Vicario's rise has been built one step at a time. Born in Udine on 7 October 1996, he came through Udinese's youth system before beginning his senior career with Fontanafredda and Venezia. With the latter, he won promotion to Serie B and the Coppa Italia Lega Pro before moving to Cagliari and enjoying another impressive Serie B campaign out on loan at Perugia.

He made his Serie A debut for Cagliari in April 2021 before moving to Empoli, a transfer that changed the course of his career. His performances in Tuscany also earned him his first Italy call-up in 2022, before he made his Azzurri debut against Ecuador in March 2024.

What he brings to Juventus

There is more to Vicario's game than reflexes, agility and shot-stopping ability. He is a goalkeeper accustomed to playing a part in the build-up and operating away from his goal, qualities he has developed further during his three seasons in the Premier League.

At Juventus, he is reunited with Luciano Spalletti - whom he previously worked with for Italy - and joins a system that requires the goalkeeper to play an active role in building from the back. His time in England has also given him valuable international experience: as well as the Premier League, Vicario has now played in both the Europa League and Champions League, experiencing different styles and tempos.

At 29, he returns to Italy in the prime of his career. He left Empoli as one of the country's most promising goalkeepers and returns three years later with more than 100 appearances in English football, a European trophy to his name and senior international experience with Italy.

Serie A Enilive welcomes Guglielmo Vicario back. And for the Udine-born goalkeeper, a new chapter begins - this time in Bianconeri colours.
