Lazio vs Inter, a rivalry full of drama

From the 1998 UEFA Cup Final to 5 May, from Vecino’s decisive night to Pedro’s brace: the defining moments between Lazio and Inter ahead of the Coppa Italia Final

Lazio and Inter once again find themselves competing for silverware, renewing a rivalry that has so often been a part of finals, Scudetti, Champions League qualification and many other nights etched into the memory of Italian football. Previous meetings between the Biancocelesti and the Nerazzurri are filled with sporting drama, revenge served years later and trophies that have shaped the history of both clubs.

The two sides have met 185 times in official competition — 92 in Milano, 92 in Rome, plus the 1997/98 UEFA Cup Final in Paris. The overall record stands at 45 Lazio victories (most recently 3-1 at the Olimpico in Serie A 2022/23), 62 draws (most recently Inter 2-2 Lazio in Serie A 2024/25 at San Siro) and 78 Inter wins (the latest being Lazio 0-3 Inter on 9 May 2026 in Serie A).

In the 12 meetings played outside Serie A since 2000, however, the balance is perfectly even: four wins apiece and four draws, a statistic that reflects how this fixture has repeatedly overturned expectations over the years. When the stakes rise and a trophy is on the line, history has often delivered unpredictable outcomes.

The first major final between the two clubs clearly belonged to the Nerazzurri. In May 1998, in Paris, Inter swept aside Lazio 3-0 in the UEFA Cup Final, thanks to goals from Zamorano, Zanetti and Ronaldo, lifting the trophy on a night that came to epitomise the Inter side coached by Simoni. With the arrival of the new millennium, however, the story shifted dramatically.

Finals, revenge and silverware: Lazio rewrite the script

The first major reversal in a knockout tie between the clubs came in what remains the only Coppa Italia Final contested between Lazio and Inter. It was the year 2000, and Lazio — fresh from winning the Scudetto — confirmed their strength on the domestic stage.

After an early Inter lead through Seedorf, Lazio turned the first leg around thanks to Nedvěd and Simeone, securing a 2-1 win at the Olimpico. A resilient 0-0 draw at San Siro was then enough to lift the trophy. The Biancocelesti repeated the feat just months later, defeating Inter again in the Supercoppa Italiana, prevailing 4-3 in a thrilling encounter decided by a Claudio López brace and goals from Mihajlović and Stanković — both future Nerazzurri players.

From that point onwards, Lazio and Inter frequently crossed paths at defining moments of the season. In Coppa Italia knockout ties since 2000, the clubs have met six times, with Inter progressing on four occasions. Yet in one-off finals, Lazio have repeatedly found a way to strike. The 2009 Supercoppa Italiana offered another example, with a 2-1 victory inspired by Matuzalém and Rocchi denying José Mourinho’s Inter the chance to begin the season with another trophy.

5 May 2002: the deepest wound

If one date stands out in the history of Lazio vs Inter, it is 5 May 2002 — one of the most painful days in Inter history.

Héctor Cúper’s side came into the final matchday with the Scudetto seemingly within reach: victory at the Olimpico against a Lazio side with little left to play for would be enough.

The opening signs appeared promising. Vieri and Di Biagio twice put Inter ahead. But Lazio refused to yield. Poborský struck twice, while Simeone and Simone Inzaghi completed a stunning turnaround, capitalising on a disastrous afternoon for the Nerazzurri defence. The match ended Lazio 4-2 Inter. Meanwhile, Juventus won in Udine and leapfrogged to the title. Inter lost one of the most dramatic league titles in the club’s history.

The night of Vecino and Inter’s revenge

To find the Nerazzurri response, attention turns to 20 May 2018. Once again, the Olimpico staged a match that would define an entire season, with Lazio and Inter meeting on the final day to decide qualification for the Champions League.

Simone Inzaghi’s Lazio led 2-1 at half-time and seemed destined to reach the finish line. But everything changed after the break. A penalty won by de Vrij and converted by Icardi brought Inter level before, in the 81st minute, Vecino rose to head home a goal that would become iconic in recent Nerazzurri history.

The 2-3 victory allowed Inter to draw level with Lazio on 72 points and overtake them thanks to their head-to-head record, securing a return to the Champions League after a six-year absence.

The present day: Inter dominance, but Lazio able to strike through Pedro

In recent years, the fixture has taken on a distinctly Nerazzurri colour scheme. Inter are unbeaten in their last nine meetings with Lazio across all competitions, winning seven and keeping six clean sheets. And yet, the most recent high-stakes meeting once again left its mark.

Last season at San Siro, Baroni’s Lazio stunned Inter as Pedro’s brace twice cancelled out Nerazzurri leads, silencing the Meazza and extinguishing Simone Inzaghi’s side’s remaining Scudetto hopes. A bitter ending that handed the title to Napoli and added yet another unpredictable chapter to a rivalry that, for decades, has continued to shape the course of Italian football.
