Inter–Torino: Coppa Italia Frecciarossa quarter-finals underway
A straight ninety-minute contest to book a semi-final berth and keep the dream of reaching the final alive, scheduled for May 13 in Rome. The two sides return to face each other at Monza just over five months after their Serie A Enilive opening-day encounter, which ended in a convincing 5–0 victory for the Nerazzurri. Entered the competition from the round of 16, Inter eliminated Venezia winning 5-1 at San Siro with Nerazzurri goals by Thuram (brace), Bonny, Diouf and Esposito, while in the current edition Baroni's team has eliminated, in order, Modena (1-0 at home), Pisa (1-0 at home) and Roma (3-2 in the Capital). The 5 Granata goals signed by Adams (2), Casadei, Ilkhan and Vlasic (1 each).
HEAD-TO-HEAD
There are 91 official precedents between the two teams in Milan with a record that sees 51 Nerazzurri victories (latest 5-0, in Serie A last 25 August), 27 draws (latest 2-2, in Serie A 2018/19) and 13 Granata victories (latest 2-1, in Serie A 2015/16).
Granata defeated in the last 7 outings at San Siro, Nerazzurri side. The last positive result for the Granata is a 2-2 in Serie A dated 26 August 2018, the last away victory 2-1 in Serie A on 3 April 2016.
It will be the 16th official encounter between Inter and Torino in the history of Coppa Italia: Granata advantage with 8 victories to 5, then 2 draws to complete the record. The round progressions are 4-3 in favour of the Nerazzurri. The last match dates back to the 1990/91 tournament: Torino progressed, defeated in Milan 1-2 in the first leg, but victorious 1-0 at home, in the second leg.
DID YOU KNOW?
In 1981/82 Inter-Torino was the grand final: Nerazzurri victory 1-0 in the first leg in Milan (goal by Aldo Serena), second leg 1-1 in Turin (scorers Cuttone for the Granata, Altobelli for the Nerazzurri) and trophy lifted by Inter, coached that year by Eugenio Bersellini.
Starting from the 2019/20 season, only on one occasion (2023/24 edition, elimination at the hands of Bologna in the Round of 16), Inter has not qualified at least to the semi-finals of the tournament.
Since 2022/23 Torino had not achieved in the Coppa the access to the quarter-finals. To find – instead – the Granata in the semi-final one must go back to the 1993/94 edition.
