Facts, figures, and statistics from 103 years of the Coppa Italia history

Over the last 103 years, 16 teams have won the Coppa Italia, from Vado in the first edition in 1922 to Bologna, last year’s champions, following their victory over Milan. Juventus hold the record for the most titles, with fifteen trophies (including four consecutive wins from 2015 to 2018, setting another record). Inter and Roma are close behind with nine each, and Lazio with seven. Fiorentina and Napoli have six wins each.

Vado in 1922 and Napoli in 1961 and 1962 are the only two clubs to have won the title without being in Serie A at the time.

Five teams have won both the Scudetto and Coppa Italia in the same season, and Inter and Lazio are among them. The first team to do so was Torino in 1942/43, followed by Juventus, who hit the milestone in the 2017/18 season (for the sixth time overall), and Napoli (1986/87). Inter won the double in 2005/6 and 2009/10, while Lazio did so in 1999/2000.

Roberto Mancini has made the most appearances in the tournament with 120 matches played (21 with Lazio), followed by Giuseppe Bergomi with 119 (all with Inter) and Pietro Vierchowod with 116. Much further behind is Lorenzo De Silvestri, the active player with the most appearances, on 42, leading a ranking ahead of Juan Cuadrado (38) and Lazio’s Alessio Romagnoli (36). Pino Wilson is the Lazio player with the most appearances in the national cup, with 58.

Among coaches with the most matches on the bench, Trapattoni leads (157), followed by Liedholm (145) and Mazzone (142).

Roberto Mancini and Gigi Buffon are tied for the most Coppa Italia victories as players, with six titles each. When also counting Mancini’s success as a coach, the former Azzurri coach has won the competition ten times overall. In terms of coaches, Sven-Göran Eriksson has also won four titles, while Massimiliano Allegri holds the record with five trophies.

Leading the top scoring charts in Coppa Italia history is Alessandro Altobelli with 56 goals, followed by Roberto Boninsegna with 48 and Giuseppe Savoldi with 47. Paulo Dybala leads the way among active players with thirteen goals, followed by Ciro Immobile with twelve, then Federico Chiesa (eleven), Gianluca Scamacca (ten), and Gianluca Lapadula and Dušan Vlahović with nine each. Inter’s all-time Coppa Italia top scorer is Spillo Altobelli with 46 goals, while Lazio’s is Bruno Giordano with 18.

Gianluca Vialli, who scored 13 goals for Sampdoria in the 1988/89 season, holds the record for most goals scored in a single edition.

Referees: Paolo Casarin, Pierluigi Collina, and Gianluca Paparesta have officiated the most Coppa Italia finals, with four each.
